This is especially important when just starting in grow your following. For starters, not every channel may be suitable for your brand. Read on for essential social media advice I received long ago. This simple strategy helped me save time spent on social media marketing. And, it allows me to focus on having an efficient, strategic presence where it matters most: with my target audience.

When growing your social media following, it’s tempting to create an account on every platform available. However, this approach is often counterproductive. So, what’s the best advice for managing your business social media presence? Focus on platforms where your audience is most engaged.

When first attempting to grow our reach, new social media platforms seemed to be popping up weekly. Creating new accounts and claiming our brand across new channels felt like a game of Whack A Mole. But not nearly as fun. Long ago, we first created our Facebook and Twitter accounts. For business connections I had to create LinkedIn company pages. Right? Everybody wants to see photos, so Pinterest was a must. Then along came Instagram. And now, Threads, Twitch, and Tik Tok. Next, The Fediverse… Enough!

“Be where your people are.”


Keeping up on all the platforms was time consuming and stressful. In addition, our fan base was not growing as much as we expected compared to all our effort. Then, a long time coach and mentor gave me the best social media advice I had ever heard. She said, “Be where your people are.”

This made perfect sense. So, I studied a few insights and simple analytics. Our most engaged followers are on Facebook and Instagram. Therefore, we started focusing our engagement there. And, we pulled back on the reins everywhere else. Ever since, our reach has continued to grow steadily on these two platforms. And we’re spending much less time whacking moles.

For example, we left Twitter even though we have thousands of Tripawds followers. We have our reasons. So, I implemented automated sharing of content to our “X” feed. But I didn’t want our followers or new potential fans to think we we’d abandoned them. So we pinned a post explaining where people can access our most valuable content and resources. As a result, our follower count has not dropped.
